On September 10, 2026, Peking University Law School’s LL.M. Program in Chinese Law held an alumni homecoming discussion themed “Reuniting Through Law, Inspiring New Ideas” at the Chen Ming Lou Alumni Center. As one of the special events marking the program’s 20th anniversary, the discussion welcomed Kevin Moore, an alumnus from the 2007 cohort, back to Yanyuan to exchange views with current students on their experiences in the program, academic planning, and career development. The event was attended by Xu Xiaoying, Director of the Teaching Affairs Office at Peking University Law School; Zhao Gaoya of the LL.M. Program in Chinese Law Office; Tu Jingxuan, Program Assistant; and all current students in the program.

Kevin Moore enrolled in the LL.M. Program in Chinese Law in 2007. He previously worked at the Shanghai office of Davis Wright Tremaine LLP and currently serves as Chief of Staff to an Oregon State Senator in the United States, focusing on matters related to criminal justice and judicial procedure.

At the beginning of the discussion, Zhao Gaoya introduced Kevin Moore’s educational background and professional experience and warmly welcomed him back to Peking University Law School. The current students then introduced themselves in turn, sharing their educational backgrounds, academic experiences, and initial motivations for coming to China to study Chinese law.

During the sharing session, Kevin Moore recalled his time at Peking University and in the LL.M. Program in Chinese Law. He noted that he had remained in contact with many fellow alumni since graduation. Recognizing the value of these connections, he hoped that the event would help build bridges of communication among alumni from different cohorts. Drawing on his own career path and those of fellow alumni, he emphasized that the value of the program extended beyond obtaining a degree. It also developed critical thinking and offered a distinctive perspective for examining different legal systems around the world—an ability of lasting value across jurisdictions and professional fields.

During the question-and-answer session, current students actively raised questions about campus life, academic planning, and career development, which Kevin Moore answered one by one based on his personal experience. He advised students to deepen their systematic knowledge of Chinese law while building on their existing professional foundations and integrating their studies in the program with their individual career plans. He encouraged them to make the most of their opportunity to study at Yanyuan and the valuable platform provided by Peking University Law School, to explore proactively and plan for the long term, and to take full advantage of the courses, faculty expertise, and academic resources available to broaden their professional horizons.

Established in 2006, Peking University Law School’s LL.M. Program in Chinese Law draws on the School’s rich academic traditions and high-quality teaching resources to provide law students from around the world with opportunities to study Chinese law systematically and develop an in-depth understanding of it. The program has educated many outstanding graduates who are active in international legal practice and public affairs. On the occasion of its 20th anniversary, the alumni homecoming discussion further strengthened ties among faculty, students, and alumni, bringing renewed vitality to the program’s development. Looking ahead, the program will continue to improve its educational framework, expand opportunities for alumni engagement, and enhance its teaching quality and international influence, making new contributions to the international community’s understanding of the development of the rule of law in China and to exchanges and mutual learning among different legal civilizations.
