Peking University Law School Achieves Outstanding Results at the 22nd Willem C.Vis(East)International Commercial Arbitration Moot Competition("Vis East")

From March 30 to April 6, 2025, the 22nd Willem C.Vis(East)International Commercial Arbitration Moot(“Vis East”)was held in Hong Kong, China. A total of 154 teams competed in this year's event, including renowned institutions such as Peking University, Tsinghua University, The University of Hong Kong, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, London School of Economics and Political Science, National University of Singapore, University of Vienna, and University of Göttingen.

The Peking University Vis East team, primarily composed of faculty and students from Peking University Law School, earned recognition from arbitrators worldwide through their outstanding performance. They became the only Chinese university team(including Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan)to advance to the global top 16 in this competition, and the sole Chinese university team to simultaneously receive the Honorable Mention for the Claimant's Brief and the Honorable Mention for the Respondent's Brief. Two team members, Zhou Ziyi and Zhao Yuwen, were honored as Best Mooters, showcasing the vibrant spirit of Peking University's young legal professionals. Following their third-place finish at the 21st Vis East in 2024, this marked the first time the Peking University team achieved outstanding results across all award categories at Vis East.




The team was coached by A.P.Gao Wei, with assistance from visiting scholar Brooks Daly, 2022 Master's candidate Wang Xiuqi, and 2024 Master's candidate in Chinese Law Theo Silverio de Oliveira.The courtroom debaters comprised 2023 Master's candidate Zhou Ziyi, Zhao Yuwen, an undergraduate from Yuanpei College Class of 2021.Research team members included Fu Jialin, an undergraduate from the School of Law Class of 2021;Zhang Zhizhi, an undergraduate from the Class of 2022;Kou Yuqi, a Master's student from the Class of 2022;Li Xinyu, a Master's student from the Class of 2023;Zhao Xinyi, a Master's student from the Class of 2024;and Zhang Wenyi, a Master's student from the Class of 2024(listed in no particular order).Leveraging their solid legal expertise, extensive moot court experience, seamless teamwork, and agile reasoning skills, the team achieved outstanding results once again at Vis East, one of the world's premier international mock arbitration competitions.

The string of successes in international mock court(arbitration)competitions reflects Peking University Law School's unwavering commitment and steady progress in aligning with national development strategies and advancing its“Double First-Class”initiative.At this new historical juncture, Peking University Law School will continue to uphold the principle of cultivating virtue through education, integrating moral and legal training.We will persistently refine our practice-oriented training mechanisms, deepen reforms and innovations in legal education, and dedicate ourselves to nurturing international legal professionals who possess firm political convictions, outstanding professional competence, mastery of international rules, and expertise in cross-border legal practice.We are committed to contributing the strength of Peking University legal scholars to writing the legal chapter in building China into an education powerhouse.

Note:The Willem C.Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot is the largest, most prestigious, and most influential competition in the field of international moot court arbitration.It is also the only student competition globally hosted by a United Nations agency.Since 2003, the competition organizing committee has established the Vis East International Commercial Arbitration Moot Court Competition in Hong Kong.It has since grown into the world's largest international commercial arbitration moot court outside the Vis Moot Vienna venue, attracting approximately 150 teams annually.
