Peking University Law School Debating Team Won the 17th Peking University Debating Competition Championship

On the evening of May 13th, the final of the "Chuang Zhi Lu Cup" – the 17th Peking University Debating Competition was held in the Sunshine Hall of Yingjie Exchange Center. The debate team of Law School and the debate team of Department of Philosophy, and of Religious Studies competed for the title about the debate “The main criterion for judging good and evil lies in motivation/results”. The contestants representing the Law School debate team participated in this competition were: Yuan Yi Yin, Sun Xiaohan, Li Haolin, and Wang Wanting.

At the beginning of the debate competition, the two sides began to make arguments and elaborate on their respective viewpoints. During the questioning session, the two sides of the debate asked questions about the loopholes in the other party's argument. In the refutation session, we reiterated our views and positions, and further pointed out the logic shortcomings of the other side. The competition entered the next session, our three defenses received many rounds of applause with agile responses, intertwined cross-examination, and distinctive personal style. In the most intense free debate session, the two sides debated each other's firepower and quibbled about each other's positions on different aspects such as cost, value orientation, and judging significance.

In the end, the two sides made a concluding statement and reviewed and analyzed the entire game. Our fourth debater Wang Wanting first clearly sorted out and refined the focus of the confrontation between the two sides, and reviewed our point of view again. We discussed the value and significance of the motives as important criteria for judging good and evil in terms of “facing society” and “facing ourselves”. Our impassioned, persuasive, concluding remarks ignited the audience at the end of the game, and we won endless applause.

After the competition, the judges made detailed comments on the debaters and highly appreciated the excellent performance of the debaters. After careful evaluation by the nine judges, the Law School debating team won the championship. This is the fourth time that our school's debating team has won the championship. Li Haolin was named the “best debater”, and Wang Wanting won the “Best Charisma Award”, and Hong Zhehong from the debate team of Department of Philosophy, and of Religious Studies won the “Best Thought Award”.

So far, the Peking University Debating Competition, which lasted for two months and was attended by a total of 25 faculty representatives, came to an end. After three years, the Law School debating team once again went to the stage of the Sunshine Hall, proved its strength with solid arguments, clear ideas, meticulous expression, and robust typhoon, and won the championship for the fourth time. The fact that the Law School debating team had won such an impressive performance was the result of two months of hard work by all the debate team’s active debaters, and it was inseparable from the support and help of the teachers and the debate team's predecessors. We believe that the Law School debating team will not forget the beginning in the future journey, keep deliberate and discerning, move forward bravely, and create brilliant performance again!
