International Week Recap: Lecture on "Chinese and Foreign Lawyers in Cross-Border Dispute Resolution Practice"

On the evening of November 3, 2025, Lin Yanhua, Partner at Fangda Partners; Liu Xiao, China Practice Managing Partner at Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan; and Shi Lei, Managing Partner of the Beijing and Shanghai Representative Offices of Clifford Chance, delivered a lecture on "Chinese and Foreign Lawyers in Cross-Border Dispute Resolution Practice" at Peking University Law School. The lecture was hosted by Dai Xin, Deputy Dean and Tenured A. P. of Peking University Law School.

Lin Yanhua noted that the role of Chinese lawyers in cross-border disputes is undergoing profound changes. Behind these changes are the acceleration of Chinese enterprises' globalization and the enhancement of Chinese legal professionals' international influence. Current cases allow us to more directly feel China's changing role on the international stage. As Chinese lawyers, we are not only handling legal issues but also participating in shaping the destiny of enterprises and the industrial landscape of this era. The realization of this professional value relies on colleagues who possess influence within international law firms yet always keep Chinese clients at heart. It is their presence that enables us to transcend geographical boundaries, focus on the cases themselves, and engage in truly meaningful legal work.

Shi Lei, focusing on the specific field of international arbitration, shared insights into the general trends of international arbitration, recent trends in China-related international arbitration, and opportunities for graduates of Chinese law schools in the field of international arbitration.

Liu Xiao stated that over the past five years, the client structure of international law firms in China has undergone a fundamental shift, moving from primarily serving the in-China business of multinational corporations to almost exclusively representing the overseas affairs of Chinese enterprises.
