The Chief Justice of Canada, the Right Honourable Beverley McLachlin, P.C., visited the Peking University Law School (“PKULS”) in the afternoon on September 30, 2015.

PKULS Dean Professor Zhang Shouwen, PKULS Vice Dean Professor Wang Xixin, Vice Dean Professor Guo Li, Assistant Dean and Director of External Affairs Office Dr Li Yuanyuan, Director of PKULS Research Center for Human Rights and Humanitarian Law (“RCHRHL”) Professor Gong Renren and RCHRHL Executive Director Professor Bai Guimei attended the meeting.

Dean Zhang on behalf of PKULS welcomed the Canadian delegation and thanked them for visiting the School. He pointed out that given the rapid economic development in the Country in recent years, the international community has shown interest in forming relationships with China, in particular the legal sector. He added that PKULS has also been undergoing internationalisation at the same time, establishing and maintaining bilateral relationships with overseas academic and professional institutions.

Dean Zhang also noted the existing friendship between Canadian universities and PKULS. He was positive that the Chief Justice’s visit would further enhance the cooperation between Sino-Canadian institutions, and welcomed any other future opportunities for strengthening the relationship.

Chief Justice McLachlin expressed her gratitude for PKULS’ warm reception of the Canadian delegation. She was delighted to be able to visit one of the best law schools in China, and was pleased to see the achievements of RCHRHL. Afterwards, Chief Justice McLachlin exchanged dialogues with participating academics and students.

Before the meeting concluded, Dean Zhang and Chief Justice McLachlin exchanged souvenirs with each other. Dean Zhang once again expressed his appreciation to the Chief Justice’s visit, and looked forward to her next visit in the foreseeable future.
