On the evening of April 30th, Beijing time, the 2023 FIDE World Chess Championship concluded in Astana, Kazakhstan, bringing great news on the eve of the PKU's anniversary. Ding Liren, a distinguished undergraduate student of Peking University Law School, Class of 2017, clinched victory in a rapid chess tiebreaker against Russian contender Nepomniachtchi, securing the coveted World Chess Championship title in the men's individual category!
In the 14 slow chess encounters of this championship, Ding Liren and Nepomniachtchi ended with an overall score of 7:7. During the rapid chess tiebreaker, the first three games resulted in draws. In a decisive fourth tiebreaker, Ding Liren showcased tenacious competitiveness and unwavering determination. Seizing a critical opportunity in the final moments, he demonstrated composed calmness, overcoming himself and securing a pivotal victory. Ding Liren proudly held the title of the 17th Men's Individual World Chess Champion!
