GU Wei, Platform Algorithm Compliance: A Practical Perspective

On December 3, 2024, Dr. Gu Wei from Alibaba Group delivered a lecture titled “Platform Algorithm Compliance: A Practical Perspective,” focusing on the governance challenges of algorithms. He began by defining algorithms and identifying five key types under regulatory scrutiny: generative, personalized recommendation, sorting, filtering, and decision-making algorithms. He discussed the risks of large-scale models, such as biases, privacy issues, and robustness limitations, and proposed governance strategies including improved data management and collaborative evaluation. From a legal perspective, he compared algorithm regulation practices in the EU, U.S., and China, emphasizing China’s dual-recording system for generative AI. Dr. Gu also explored advanced compliance issues, such as AI’s memory challenges, hallucinations, and ethical concerns. He advocated for a balanced approach combining baseline compliance and ethical self-regulation to dynamically manage the risks associated with algorithmic technology.
