Garry A. Gabison, Regulating Autonomous Vehicle

On October 25, 2024, Dr. Garry A. Gabison from Queen Mary University of London delivered a lecture on “Regulating Autonomous Vehicles,” exploring the legal and regulatory challenges posed by automated vehicles (AVs). Tracing their development from the 1990s to their current prevalence, he discussed how AVs are revolutionizing transportation by eliminating the need for human drivers, thus raising critical questions about liability and responsibility in accidents—specifically, whether it should fall on the manufacturer or the user. Dr. Gabison also examined the future implications of AVs, addressing whether systemic changes to infrastructure or government-led standardization of communication are necessary to maximize road safety and fully integrate this transformative technology.
