On October 29, 2024, Professor Sean Cooney, Professor of University Melbourne Law School and PKU Law Global Faculty Professor, delivered a lecture titled “Recent Reforms in Australia to Do with the Gig Economy,” discussing Australia’s significant labor law reforms concerning platform workers. The lecture highlighted the Fair Work Commission's newly granted powers to set pay rates, approve collective agreements, and review unfair terminations. However, the reforms remain controversial and still afford platform workers fewer rights than traditional employees.

Professor Sean Cooney is the former Associate Dean of Law School, University of Melbourne. Professor Cooney's research interests concern international and comparative labour and employment law, with a focus on Asia. He has worked on new approaches to improving international working standards, including on collaborative projects on understanding Chinese labour law reform, enforcement in Australia, and assessing the effect of legal change in several Asia-Pacific countries
