Fostering Law Reforms by Multilateral Development Banks

On October 24, 2024, Mr. Gerard Sanders, former General Counsel of Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, lectured on the increasing integration of legal reform into Multilateral Development Banks’ (MDBs) development activities. He identified three key forms of MDB-led legal reform: integrating reform into infrastructure projects, supporting standalone legal reform initiatives, and embedding rule-of-law elements in project designs to enhance legal systems and transparency. Mr. Sanders emphasized the influence of external factors, such as international standards and stakeholder perspectives, on MDBs' legal reform efforts. He concluded that MDBs play a critical role in advancing global legal standards through collaboration with the international community.
