The  “Des Voeux Chambers Scholarships” was initiated and established in 2023 by Dr. William M.F. Wong, SC, who serves asmember of the Committee for the Basic Law of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region under the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress and is an alumnus of the Peking University School of Law. Des Voeux Chambers, established in 1984, is now the largest barristers’ chamber in Hong Kong, with nearly 100 outstanding barristers as members. The Des Voeux Chambers PKU Scholarship annually awards one selected student or recent graduate from PKU Law School with full-tuition and cost scholarship in connection with the winner’s studies in the BA in Jurisprudence degree at the University of Oxford or BA Law degree at the University of Cambridge. The mission of the scholarship is to offer talented young Chinese lawyers opportunities to study English common law at a world-class institution and help them become top experts in international dispute resolution for China.

The scholarship’s inaugural winner, Mr. Dong Chen (LLB Class of 2021), was selected in May 2024 by a committee consisting of both Des Voeux barristers and PKU Law representatives. Mr. Dong graduated from PKU Law with high honors and was a winner of multiple distinguished scholarships, including the prestigious National Scholarship which was awarded annually to only the top three students at the Law School. He was also on the PKU Law team that ranked first among all Chinese mainland teams in the Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot. Mr. Dong will commence his studies at Oxford in fall 2024.
