On November 28, 2023, Professor Sean Cooney, Distinguished Global Faculty of PKU Law and Professor of Law at The University of Melbourne, delved into the critical topic of "Violence and harassment in the workplace: Australia's ratification of Convention 190."
Professor Sean Cooney 's lecture shed light on Convention No. 190 (C190), a landmark international treaty adopted in 2019 by the International Labour Organization to eradicate violence and harassment in the world of work. He emphasized that C190 addresses not only traditional workplace dynamics but also the challenges posed by today's dynamic and diverse professional landscapes.
Professor Sean Cooney emphasized the need for a fundamental cultural shift to tackle sexual harassment, advocating for a deep reevaluation of workplace values and power structures. He envisioned creative and inclusive environments that dismantle traditional power hierarchies, fostering greater equality and respect.
Professor Sean Cooney 's lecture concluded with practical steps for implementing C190 in Australia, equipping audiences with concrete avenues for creating safer and more equitable workplaces.

Sean Cooney is professor of University of Melbourne law school. Professor Cooney's research interests concern international and comparative labour and employment law, with a focus on Asia. He has worked on new approaches to improving international working standards, including on collaborative projects on understanding Chinese labour law reform, enforcement in Australia, and assessing the effect of legal change in several Asia-Pacific countries. He has published articles in major refereed law journals in the United States, China and Australia. Between 2014 and 2016, Sean served as a Legal Specialist in the Labour Law and Reform Unit at the International Labour Organization (ILO) in Geneva, where he provided advice to governments in countries such as China, India, Malaysia, Myanmar, Pakistan and Vietnam. He continues to consult for the ILO. He studied at the University of Melbourne and obtained his doctoral degree from Columbia University and also spent several years as a lawyer practicing mainly in the areas of employment and administrative law.
