Erik Solheim, Carbon Neutrality, Green Development and Global Economic Trends

On May 11, 2023, Mr. Erik Solheim, former UN Under-Secretary-General and former Executive Director of UNEP, gave a lecture on "Carbon Neutral, Green Development and Global Economic Trends" at PKULaw.
Mr. Solheim began his lecture by discussing China's leadership in world environmental protection. China has made significant progress in reducing its carbon emissions and improving its environmental quality.
Mr. Solheim argued that businesses have a responsibility to reduce their environmental impact and that they can play a key role in driving green innovation. He also noted that businesses can benefit from green development by reducing their costs and improving their reputation.
Mr. Solheim discussed the important role of science and technology, and law in green development. Science and technology can be used to develop new technologies that can help to reduce environmental impact, to improve our understanding of environmental problems and to develop proper solutions. Law can be used to create a level playing field for businesses and to encourage them to adopt environmentally friendly practices.  Law is a better tool to protect the environment from harm.
Mr. Solheim concluded by expressing his belief that great nations should respect each other's political institutions and religious beliefs, like old Indian saying that "the whole universe is one family" still holds true today.
