Robert P. Merges, Intellectual Property and Research Method

On May 19, 2023, Professor Robert P. Merges, Distinguished Global Faculty of Peking University Law School, Wilson Sonsini Goodrich and Rosati Professor of Law at the University of California, Berkeley, and co-Director of the Berkeley Center for Law & Technology, gave a lecture on "Intellectual Property and Research Methods."
Mastering research methods in intellectual property law is very important. Intellectual property law is a rapidly evolving field, and new technologies are constantly raising new questions about the law. As a result, IP students need to be able to master a variety of research methods in order to keep up with the latest developments.
Professor Merges discussed several different research methods that can be used in intellectual property law. He highlighted the importance of traditional methods, such as legal research and historical research. Economic analysis and empirical studies also play an important role for us to understand the impact of intellectual property law on innovation and economic growth.
Professor Merges emphasized the importance of critical thinking in intellectual property research. Students need to be able to think critically about the law and to evaluate the arguments of others.
