Introduction to admit international students to proceed to the degree of JM in the Law School,2014

In the year of 2014, Peking University School of Law keeps on admitting international students to proceed to the degree of  JM . It aims at enhancing international communication and cooperation , improving the JM brand effect and cultivating senior international legal professionals who have a good knowledge of Chinese laws. According to the regulations prescribed in the Enrollment Guide, enrollment items are as follows:
 
Enrollment Method and Plan
According to the relevant national and school policy, we exercise examination system when admitting international students to proceed to the degree of Juris Master. The applicant should submit the required materials as prescribed, then the relevant department and faculty of the university review the materials and determine the preliminary adimission list based on the general ability of the applicants. At last, the list is reported to the postgraduate school and the international student office to be examined and approved.

Enrollment Target and Application Requirements
1.     The applicant should be non-Chinese citizens owning valid foreign passport; the applicant should be healthy, well-conducted and observe the Chinese laws and regulations as well as the school rules and regulations;
2.   The applicant should have bachelor’s degree(unlimited subjects and majors), fresh graduate should submit pre-graduation certificate when applying for the JM and submit original copy of diploma when registering;
3.   The applicant should have good Chinese language ability which enables him to attend class and discuss with Chinese students, they should also have the ability to take exams, write papers and attend thesis defence;
4.   The applicant should be excellent in undergraduate college;
5.   The healthy conditions of the applicant should meet the prescribed medical standards.
 
Application Date, Procedure, Material and Fee
1.    Application date, procedure, fee and other items can be searched for in the Enrollment Guide on the Peking University Postgraduate School Website.
2.    Application materials:
(1)  International Student Application Form of Peking University(Postgraduate);
(2)  Credentials of highest academic degree obtained, original copy or certified copy, Chinese or English;
(3)  Official transcript of graduate school, original copy or certified copy, Chinese or English;
(4)  Personal statement(study and research proposals included),no less than 800 words. The following contents should be included: undergraduate background, learning situation, work experience, participation in organizations and social activities at school or at work, understanding of realm of jurisprudence and Chinese legal professions, study and research proposals when proceeding to the degree of JM, expected employment goal and so on. Personal statement should be written in Chinese, the statement form can be downloaded from the following website: http://www.isd.pku.edu.cn;
(5)  Recommendation letters from two professors or associate professors(or other counterparts), the form of letters can be downloaded from the following website: http://www.isd.pku.edu.cn   
(6)  The transcript copy of HSK, the applicant should get more than 210 scores in level 6 and more than 65 scores in writing;
(7)  The copy of passport which is valid and ordinary;
(8)  The applicant can also submit the following materials reflecting his academic level: personal research achievement, published academic article, other original research achievement, certificate of award and so on.
For the materials prescribed except the recommendation letters, both original and copy documents are required to be submitted. The materials should be mailed or delivered to the Peking University International Student Office before the deadline. Review, retest and admission
The staff of Peking University International Student Office review the basic qualifications of the applicant, if qualified, the application materials are transferred to Educatioanl Adiministration Office of Law School.
Law School establishes Entrance Examination Commission, reviewing the application materials comprehensively based on the school, major, achievement, academic level, virtue and development potential in the field of major applied for. The commission will send the qualified applicants the retest notification before the end of March.2014.
The applicant attending the retest is required to report to the retest commission the following contents: study and working experience, scientific research experience and achievement, understanding of realm of jurisprudence, study and research proposals and so on
The retest will start in mid-to-end of April. The retest form is interview. The retest focuses on Chinese language ability, logical thinking, reasoning ability, reaction capacity, ability of linguistic organization and expression, ability of composite analysis, ability of solving practical problems and other overall qualities.
Entrance Examination Commission determines the preliminary admission list based on the results of review and retest. Then the list is reported to the postgraduate school to be reviewed and approved. Official admission list will be brought out before the end of May, 2014. Admission Letter, visa application form and other documents will be sent out by International Student Office in late June, 2014. 
 
Entrance Time and Training Method
1.     Entrance and Registration: Beginning of September, 2014, the same entrance time with common postgraduates. Please go through the entrance and registration procedures on time. If you can’t do it on time for special reasons, please write to the school asking for leave. If you don’t register within two weeks without reasons, the admission qualification will be cancelled.
2.     Learning Style and school system: the JM learning style is full-time, the school system of JM(non-law) is three-year, while that of JM(law) is two-year. We carry out credit system, students are required to select courses, take exams, get full credits, complete professional internship and graduation thesis within the prescribed duration of study, according to the teaching program and relevant provisions. International students select postgraduate public courses(foreign language and politics)according to the relevant provisions of postgraduate school.
3.     Teaching Arrangement: students of JM(non-law) take public courses and basic courses of law in the first school year; take major required courses and elective courses of law in the second and third school year, meantime, complete professional internship and graduation thesis. Students of JM(law) directly take major required courses and elective courses of law after entrance and complete professional internship and graduation thesis in the second school year.
4.     Training Mode: in order to further improve training quality and explore the training mode of cultivating high-level, inter-disciplinary and applied legal talents that meet the need of market and society, our university has enforced the JM Cultivation Reform Programme since the end of 2004.The programme has the following traits:
(1)  Consolidating basic knowledge of law. Students are required to strengthen theoretical basis of law through taking basic courses of law, in order to well prepared to take major courses later.
(2)  Targeted Training through separating majors. JM(non-law) project sets up the following fifteen majors at present: financial law, real estate law, fiscal and tax law, intellectual property law, international business law, constitution and administrative law, procedural law, criminal law, medical law, commercial law, market competition law, law and public policy, environmental resources and energy law, patent agency, public international law; JM(law) will soon set up the following four majors: financial law, fiscal and tax law, commercial law and international business law.
(3)  Reinforcing the training of practice ability and application ability. Each major sets up advanced major courses which focus on professionalism, practicality and applicability. We invite or employ backbone teachers, well-known professors and experts to give lessons. We also adopt various forms to teach, such as classroom lectures, seminars, case study, moot court, scene view and so on. 
(4)  Strengthen the function of social practice. Except for taking practical courses, students are also required to complete no less than three-month internship in legal practice sectors. Students can’t graduate without completing internship report and getting passed.
(5)  Double tutorial system based on tutor team and united training by Law School and legal practice sectors. We employ experts from legislative, judicial and governmental sectors, as well as law firms, accounting firms, banks and other corporations, to act as JM part-time tutors. They instruct students to complete major courses, legal practice courses, internships, thesis writing and job-hunting.
5.Degree Awarding: upon completion of postgraduate study and prescribed courses with results qualified, full credits got, internship completed, master’s thesis completed and passed, the academic degrees committee reviews and approves, then students are awarded the graduation and degree certificates issued by the nation,.

Tuition Standards and Scholarships
Tuition of international students who apply for JM, is 29000 yuan per school year, according to the standards published by Peking University International Student Office in 2014. The tuition is paid on registration day. The student who doesn’t pay or doesn’t pay enough, will be denied registration.
The international students who proceed to the degree of JM can’t apply for the postgraduate academic scholarship and assistantship of Peking University, as well as the Law School special scholarships funded by the society. As to the scholarships set up for international students by the university, Beijing and Chinese governments, please contact Peking University International Student Office to consult.
 
Accommodation
International students should solve accommodation problems themselves and pay their own.
