The Centre for Commercial Law Studies (CCLS) is pleased to announce collaborative PhD studentship funding opportunities with Peking University Law School and Shanghai University of Finance and Economics for the 2014-15 academic year.

The Award

The Studentship comprises a full fee waiver, at international rates, and an annual stipend (the amount for which is set by the China Scholarship Council (CSC)).  The deadline for submission of full Queen Mary PhD applications, using our online application system, for successfully shortlisted candidates is Friday 31st January 2014.  However, the deadline for submission of the initial funding application to the relevant Chinese University may be earlier than this for information, please see the relevant contact point below.
Each award is only open to students who have already graduated or who are close to completion of a taught postgraduate degree course in a law or law-related topic at the Chinese university the award relates to (for further information please see below).
The award is open to applicants who wish to start their doctoral studies in September 2014

Who is Eligible?

Peking University Law School Award
The award is open to students who have taken or who are close to completion of a taught postgraduate degree course at Peking Universitys Law School.     The proposed research must be in the area of Dispute Resolution (including commercial and investment arbitration). Also, the topic should preferably have international relevance, rather than focusing on Chinese matters only.
Applicants who are successfully short-listed for this award by their Chinese University will have to submit a full PhD application to Queen Mary, and meet our various entry criteria (for further information on this, please see below).

Shanghai University of Finance and Economics Award

The award is open to students who have taken or who are close to completion of a taught postgraduate degree course in a Law or Law-related subject area at Shanghai University of Finance and Economics. 
The proposed research must be in the area of Banking and Financial Law. Also, the topic should preferably have international relevance, rather than focusing on Chinese matters only.

Applicants who are successfully short-listed for this award by their Chinese University will have to submit a full PhD application to Queen Mary, and meet our various entry criteria (for further information on this, please see below).

How to Apply

Stage 1 Initial Application to your Chinese University

In the first instance, applicants should apply directly to the contact points mentioned below at the university they belong to. The contact will provide them with information about how to apply for the award, including about what application documentation should be provided, and the deadline for submission. Applicants applications will then be reviewed by staff at their Chinese University, who will select a short-list of candidates. This short-list will then be released to the CCLS Funding Board at Queen Mary, University of London.

Stage 2 Application to CCLS by short-listed candidates

All applicants who are successfully short-listed for this award by their Chinese University will have to submit a full PhD application to Queen Mary, University of London, including all required supporting documentation, by the deadline date of Friday 31st January 2014. 
The short-listed candidates will all be interviewed by telephone/Skype, and one successful candidate for each award will be chosen.

Please note: Any applications with missing documentation by the deadline date may not be considered, despite being short-listed.     The School of Law PhD programme requires an IELTS score of 7.5 or equivalent. Read about our English Language requirements, including which English-language testing schemes we accept, and what equivalent scores are required.
Our PhD programme also would look for applicants to have gained the equivalent of a Pass with Distinction in their post-graduate degree.  In the Chinese system, this equates to a mark of around 80-85% overall.
