Peking University & Hong Kong University launched a new law undergraduate double degree project cooperation formally

  In response to the “the Belt and Road” initiative,implementing the “Building Education and Talent Heights” Strategic Requirements Proposed by the “Guangdong, Hong Kong, Macao and Dawan District Development Plan”, Peking University and the University of Hong Kong have developed a new undergraduate dual degree program in the field of law with the principle of “complementary advantages, common development, and equality and mutual benefit”.

  On February 20, 2019, Hao Ping, president of Peking University, and Zhang Xiang, president of the University of Hong Kong, signed the cooperation agreement on the double major law program on behalf of the two universities respectively, jointly set up a five-year undergraduate law double degree program. The project aims to explore new modes of overseas cooperation in legal education to promote one country, two systems as a major constitutional practice in contemporary China and help China play a more active role in the new international political and economic order, in order to train and train first-class talents who are familiar with mainland and overseas laws.

  The program is jointly initiated by the law school of Peking University and the school of law of the University of Hong Kong. The two universities will set up a joint admission committee to jointly formulate admission standards and curriculum management programs. The program combines the advantages of the two top law schools in Hong Kong and the mainland to recruit students in both the mainland and Hong Kong. The first batch of program students are expected to officially enroll in the fall semester of 2019.The project students will receive two and a half years of professional law training in PKU and HKU respectively. After meeting the graduation requirements of the two universities, they will obtain the bachelor's degree in law issued by PKU and HKU.

  Peking University Law School and HKU Law School have a long-term and close partnership. The two law schools have held the “PKU-HKU” annual conference alternately since 1999. Since 2010, the two parties have jointly established the master of laws program. This is the first time for the two sides to cooperate on the undergraduate double degree program. It is a new attempt to cultivate legal professionals to meet the needs of the country, and it is of great significance to promote the exchanges and cooperation between the mainland and Hong Kong legal higher education.

  The mainland belongs to the civil law system of statutory law tradition, while Hong Kong belongs to the common law system of case law tradition. The legal systems of the two places are different, and each has its own strengths. This program enables students to receive the top legal education in both mainland China and Hong Kong, so that they can have an in-depth understanding of the legal system of the two places and the concept of the rule of law in different legal systems, expanding the global vision in the comparative integration, forming cross-legal knowledge background, having the ability to cope with different cultural, political and social background and to solve Chinese and foreign legal problems.
